Winery R&A PFAFFL, Stetten<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Roman Pfaffl was awarded the title of “Falstaff Winemaker of the Year” in 1996, a dream he had not even dared to dream came true for him. In just under 20 years, with the help of his wife Adelheid, he had turned an agricultural business with 0.75 hectares of vineyards into a 20-hectare winery with great ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another 20 years followed, during which the next generation was also heavily involved – an interplay that obviously works: The U.S. magazine “Wine Enthusiast” named the winery “European Winery of the Year 2016”. This is the first time that this coveted title has gone to Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So for about 40 years, the Pfaffls have stood for high-quality Gr\u00fcner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Zweigelt and St. Laurent. The estate’s vineyards, which now cover 110 hectares, are scattered across ten different municipalities in the southern Weinviertel region and even reach as far as Vienna. This distribution brings with it a diversity of soils and microclimates that Roman Josef Pfaffl knows how to skillfully exploit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows how to bring out the characteristics of the individual sites and present his wines in a wide variety of styles, from light and playful to dense and powerful. Of course, this is especially true for the parade variety Gr\u00fcner Veltliner, which is vinified in as many as six variants. But the winery is also very strong in red wines. “Some of our vineyards benefit from the mild Pannonian influences that make it to us via the Marchfeld region,” says Roman Josef Pfaffl, not without ambition, because the reds have grown particularly close to his heart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
