Wine region Mittelburgenland

One red wine variety plays the leading role in the 2,118 hectares of vineyards in the Mittelburgenland winegrowing region: Blaufränkisch, which ideally represents its origin in the form of DAC wines. Four communities set the tone: Deutschkreutz, Horitschon, Lutzmannsburg as well as Neckenmarkt, and two modern cooperatives prove that size can very well go hand in hand with top quality. The topographical and climatic conditions are favorable: the vineyards are protected by the Bucklige Welt in the west, the Ödenburger Mountains in the north and the Günser Mountains in the south. From the Pannonian Plain in the east, the warm, dry wind can flow in unhindered. The soils are fairly uniform, mostly heavy, deep loamy soils with great water storage capacity, which has a positive effect especially in dry years. This allows Blaufränkisch, but also Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to gain strength and structure.

Whether single-varietal wines or cuvées deliver the better result is debatable. In any case, it is undisputed that Blaufränkisch will continue to play a leading role on the road to the future of wine. Quality is guaranteed by an up-and-coming winegrowers’ association with a great sense of togetherness. But two modern winegrowers’ cooperatives are also reinforcing the strategy for success. They recognized early on that modern investments in red wine are essential for market success and export opportunities. In terms of tourism, Central Burgenland has also become an attractive destination, not least thanks to the thermal spas that have literally sprung up in recent years. A colorful range of leisure activities for all age groups is another plus point of this hospitable region.
