The grapes for this wine come from the Altenberg site, a southwestern slope facing the lake. The starting material for the formation of the soil is 7 million year old marine sediments, overlaid with red ferruginous gravel on the upper slope and changing to a silty-loamy part in the lower area. Particular to Altenberg are the numerous limestone precipitates and the partly calcareous soil.
