Winery Stefan BAUER, Wagram
Stefan and Karin Bauer have combined the past and the future with imagination – in each of their wines and in the architecture of the winery. They trust in the natural advantages of the region’s typical varieties and try to achieve an unobtrusive classic style through vinification, from which the leading varieties Grüner and Roter Veltliner benefit in particular. Roter Veltliner, the diva among the Veltliners, enjoys special affection at the winery, both the classic version and the reserve, which benefits particularly from aging and storage in acacia barrels. The touching straightforwardness and complete absence of fashionable affectations characterize the winemaker and his wines. “I don’t chase short-lived trends,” says Stefan Bauer.
As a tribute to the foresight of his grandparents Josef and Mathilde Hutzler, Stefan Bauer named his best Grüner Veltliner “Hutzler,” harvested from the oldest and best vines in the vineyards around Königsbrunn. The “Hutzler” is a complex Veltliner, balanced yet youthful; its ripe and complex fruit develops the full harmonious power of the Wagram loess soils. The “Wagram” forms the basis of the Grüner Veltliner series, followed by the two single-vineyard Veltliners Ried Bromberg and Ried Steinagrund, as well as a mature version of the “Hutzler,” which is always available from autumn onwards.
