Winery HOLZAPFEL, Wachau

The Holzapfel Winery is located in a former “Lesehof”, a jewel of a building built 700 years ago by the canons of St. Pölten and baroquized by Jakob Prandtauer. At that time, when the vineyards of the Wachau were still mostly in ecclesiastical hands and belonged to the surrounding monasteries, the Lesehof was the center for pressing the grapes and for the administration of wine sales on site.

Today, a total of about 14 hectares of vineyards are cultivated using exclusively traditional working methods. Among them are such outstanding sites as Achleiten, Vorderseiber, Weitenberg, Klaus and Kollmitz.

On stony, mineral-rich, but also calcareous, slate-interspersed first-class grapes thrive on stony, mineral-rich, but also calcareous, slate-strewn soils. But not only the special locations and the attention to low yields are responsible for the uniqueness of these grapes. The temperature variations caused by special climatic conditions and the different altitudes of the vineyards cause an acidity that provides freshness and elegance.

Karl Holzapfel strives to produce clear, fruity-fine, characterful-lively wines for everyday enjoyment and dry-compact Smaragd wines with complex aromas and great potential.

After fermentation, the wine remains in contact with the fine lees. This creates distinctive wines with style, clear, delicate fruit, and the best balance between minerality and freshness. The individual way of vinification develops wines of special identity for many drinking occasions.

The range includes the quality categories Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd in the varieties GrĂĽner Veltliner, Riesling and Pinot Blanc. The selection Hippolyt impresses with special creaminess, elegance as well as finesse and reflects the magic of the Wachau.
