The Malat Winery is one of those special businesses that produce top-quality products in all areas: white, red, sparkling and sweet – and exclusively from grapes grown in its own vineyards. Since 2008, Michael Malat has been managing the family-run winery in Furth bei Göttweig, which was founded in 1722, and realizes his own style of wine here. “I want to make wines that people like to drink and not just taste, and in each of them my personal signature should be recognizable: elegance, finesse and drinking flow!”
Michael Malat pursues a style of wine that was already followed by his father Gerald, the winegrowing pioneer of the Krems Valley, who brought the winery to the top with his visionary work. “The diversity of our range reflects on the one hand the long tradition, but on the other hand also the potential of our winegrowing region,” Michael Malat is pleased about the great opportunities he finds as a winemaker in the Krems Valley. He deliberately refrains from irrigating the vines, which is common in many places: “It would change the character of the vineyards. Only when the vines are forced to root deeply in order to access water and minerals does the character of the site come across in the wine in a completely authentic way.” Spontaneous fermentation for all site wines and the complete absence of botrytis grapes also ensure a precise, recognizable profile for all wines. These present themselves clear and transparent, varietal and animating, rich in finesse, multilayered and authentic, but never lush or opulent.

Since 1976, Austria’s first sparkling wines, Malat Brut and Malat Brut Rosé, have also been produced using the traditional method. Varietally typical noble sweet wines complete the product range – these also always rank among the best in the country. At the Malat winery, perfection has been the guiding principle for many generations.
