Winery KERSCHBAUM, Horitschon

The winery has long been one of the top wineries in Mittelburgenland. Paul took over the mixed agricultural business from his father about 20 years ago and soon focused on viticulture. As a determined young winemaker, he recognized the potential of the Blaufränkisch grape variety in his home community of Horitschon and built up a business that is now one of Austria’s leading wineries.

In 1989, Paul began bottling, and today the barrique stock amounts to about 850 barrels.

Paul has remained true to his philosophy of pressing profound and complex wines that do not immediately throw themselves at the connoisseur, but rather display their qualities only after a certain maturation phase. Over the years, a distinctive “Kerschbaum style” has emerged. The wines are consistently powerful and full-bodied, but at the same time stimulating to drink, balanced and harmonious in their acidity.

Paul pushes powerful, long-lasting wines with – deliberately discreet – wood touches and accepts that they need a lot of air because they are rich in tannins and tannins. Targeted grape production with double fruit thinning, gentle maceration for up to 25 days and storage in used and new wood lead to success. From the 2011 harvest, Paul entrusted the production of the wines to his son and future successor.
