Winery STIEGELMAR, Gols

The Stiegelmar family can be described as a true winemaking dynasty. Their annals do not go back 1,000 years, but since the middle of the last century, a widely ramified family network has developed that literally has wine in its blood.

The foundation stone for today’s winery with its vineyard area, which has now grown to 50 hectares, was laid by grandparents Johann and Theresia Stiegelmar in 1956. They were followed in the 80s by their sons Hans, Gerhard and Walter, who led the company as a successful triumvirate. It is thanks to their visionary ideas that, for Burgenland standards, the use of autochthonous grape varieties typical of the region was pushed to the top of quality at a very early stage. This was in contrast to the ubiquitous tradition of viticulture at Lake Neusiedl, which had been to concentrate primarily on the production of top-quality sweet white wines. From the very beginning, the Stiegelmars focused on the red varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent, which until then had more or less led a wallflower existence in the lake region. With this trio of grape varieties, they took off at that time and began an unimagined flight of fancy. The farm’s most important white grape varieties are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Muscat Ottonel.

Today, Jürgen Stiegelmar is responsible for the quality of the family winery’s wines, while his cousin Andrea Stiegelmar manages sales and administration.
